Why Ans

Ans is a municipality and city located in the province of Liège within the Wallonia region of Belgium. Covering an area of 23.35 square kilometers, it serves as part of the broader Liège urban agglomeration alongside neighboring areas such as Liège, Seraing, Herstal, Saint-Nicolas, and Flémalle. As of early 2006, the municipality was home to 27,322 residents, resulting in a population density of 1,170 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The municipality comprises four distinct districts or settlements: the central area of Ans, Alleur, Loncin, and Xhendremael. Historically, Ans shares a regional partnership established in 1999 with the Pays d'Ans association in Périgord, which connects the municipality to six French localities associated with the historic lordship of Ans.

Ans is widely recognized in the sporting world as the finish location for the historic Liège–Bastogne–Liège road bicycle race. Held annually every April, this event holds the distinction of being the oldest among the classic cycling races, drawing attention to the area each spring.

Over the years, the area has been the birthplace or home of notable public figures, including professional footballer Léon Jeck, long-serving mayor and politician Michel Daerden, and politicians Victor Larock and Annie Servais-Thysen.
