Discover Ansgar Church (Ansgarkirche in German, Ansgar Kirke in Danish), an evangelical lutheran house of worship nestled in northern Flensburg, Germany. Named after Saint Ansgar, this culturally rich site serves the largest congregation within the Danish Church in Southern Schleswig, representing roughly 650 members across 500 households. The idea for the church was first proposed in 1949 by Pastor Martin Nørgaard.
Following years of fundraising, the grounds were acquired in 1962, and construction—funded by a donation from A.P. Møller and Chastine Mckinney Møller—took place between 1966 and November 1968. As you explore the site, you will be viewing a structure partially modeled after Notmark Kirke on the Danish island of Als.
Renowned architect Kay Fisker designed the building prior to his passing, after which architects Robert Duelund Mortensen and Svend Høgsbroe completed the vision. The complex, which includes a dedicated community hall, was officially placed under monument protection in early 2007 and underwent a thoughtful remodeling in 2008. Visit Ansgar Church to appreciate a unique piece of cross-border Danish-German heritage, modern ecclesiastical design, and persistent community history in northern Germany.
