Why Antananarivo

Antananarivo, also referred to historically as Tananarive or simply Tana, is the capital and largest metropolis of Madagascar. Situated in the central highlands at an elevation of 1,280 meters above sea level, it stands as the highest national capital among island nations. Set across steep hillsides and surrounded by the expansive Betsimitatatra rice fields, the city serves as the administrative center of the Analamanga region and the central seat of Madagascar's government, hosting the presidency, national legislature, supreme court, and diplomatic missions.

Founded around 1610 when the Merina King Andrianjaka established a fortified royal compound called a rova on the hill of Analamanga, the town grew into the prominent political hub of the Kingdom of Imerina. Originally called Analamanga, meaning "Blue Forest," it was later renamed Antananarivo, or "City of the Thousand," in recognition of the garrison sent to secure the site. The settlement served as the royal capital over successive centuries, surviving political splits and eventual French colonization in the late 19th century, during which infrastructure like paved roads, hill tunnels, and railways were added. It remained the nation's capital following Malagasy independence in 1960.

Today, the urban landscape spans three main tiers: the historic upper town (la haute ville) around the royal summit, the middle town along the hill slopes, and the lower town spread out into the plains. Visitors can explore key historic sites, including the reconstructed royal palace complex, the 19th-century Andafiavaratra Palace, the tomb of Rainiharo, and four historic stone martyr churches. Other focal points include the central Andohalo square, Lake Anosy with its nearby base plain at Mahamasina, the Avenue de l'Indépendance framed by commercial arcades, and the historic Soarano railway station.

As the cultural and economic heart of Madagascar, Antananarivo offers access to the Museum of Art and Archaeology, the Museum of Ethnology and Paleontology, the Tsimbazaza Zoo, and a vibrant local arts and nightlife scene. The city contains thousands of religious structures, including Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, alongside historic brick "trano gasy" architecture. Modern international access is provided via Ivato International Airport, located roughly 15 kilometers from the city center.
