Why Arezzo

Arezzo is a city and provincial capital in the Tuscany region of central Italy, situated roughly 80 kilometres southeast of Florence at an elevation of 296 metres. Resting on a steep hill that rises above the Arno River floodplain, the city contains an upper district featuring its cathedral, town hall, and the Medici Fortress. Downslope, historical streets lead to the city gates, preserving much of its medieval layout.

First flourishing as an important Etruscan settlement named Aritim, the city became the Roman military post of Arretium along the Via Cassia. It gained early renown for its metalcraft and distinct red-glazed pottery. During the Middle Ages, Arezzo developed into an independent city-state before coming under Florentine control in 1384. Over the centuries, the city and its surrounding province produced influential figures including Giorgio Vasari, Guido of Arezzo, and Michelangelo.

Arezzo holds significant artistic and architectural landmarks. The Basilica of San Francesco features the Renaissance fresco cycle depicting the History of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca, while the Basilica of San Domenico houses a 13th-century altar crucifix by Cimabue. The inclined, brick-paved Piazza Grande serves as a focal point, bordered by the church of Santa Maria della Pieve, the Vasari Loggia, and the Palace of the Lay Fraternity.

Cultural events form a major part of local heritage. The city regularly holds the Saracen Joust, a chivalric tournament where mounted competitors target a carved bust while locals dress in historical costume. Arezzo also hosts the Arezzo Wave music and arts festival each July, as well as an international polyphonic choral competition. Additionally, the city served as a primary setting for the film Life Is Beautiful.

The local climate is humid subtropical, marked by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. January is the coolest month, while August is the warmest, and rainfall reaches its annual peak in November before dropping to its lowest levels in July. The city is situated in a transitional seismic area, experiencing a lower risk of severe earthquakes than neighboring regions to the east.
