Step back in time to discover Argentoratum, the ancient Roman military outpost established by Nero Claudius Drusus in 12 BC that eventually became modern-day Strasbourg, France. Located near the banks of the Rhine in the Germania Superior province, this historical site evolved from a Gaulish settlement into a major Roman camp expanding up to 20 hectares. History buffs will love exploring the heart of the ancient camp situated on the Grande Île.
As you walk along Rue du Dôme and Rue des Hallebardes, you are tracing the exact paths of the ancient cardo and decumanus. You can also visit Saint Stephen's Church, where archaeological digs unearthed an apse dating to the late 4th or early 5th century—considered the oldest church in Alsace and likely the first seat of the Catholic Diocese of Strasbourg. Additionally, artifacts found along the Route des Romains in the Koenigshoffen suburb reveal where ancient civilian dwellings, shops, and large burial places once stood, along with fragments of a grand 4th-century Mithraeum.
Though destroyed by fire and rebuilt six times over five centuries, Argentoratum reached its most extended, fortified shape under Trajan. It offers a fascinating glimpse into imperial military power, ancient battles, and early Christian history.
