Why Arkalyk
Arkalyk is a city situated in the Kostanay Region of northern Kazakhstan, lying 480 kilometers from Kostanay and 670 kilometers from Astana. Positioned within the expansive Kazakh steppe, the local geography consists of hilly terrain rising up to 390 meters high, marked by drying creeks such as Akjar to the north and Arkalyksay to the south. The surrounding landscape features deep mining pits measuring 20 to 50 meters deep. The regional environment experiences a cold continental climate, registering an average annual temperature of 4.5 °C alongside 246 millimeters of annual precipitation, with more rain occurring during the winter than in summer.
Established in 1956 following the post-war discovery of rich bauxite deposits, Arkalyk quickly grew as a mining settlement and achieved city status in 1965. During the Soviet era, it developed into a major industrial location, operating a radio factory, ceramic plant, grain elevator, and textile facilities, alongside a bauxite mine that produced up to 20 percent of the Soviet Union's bauxite ore. Arkalyk also gained historical importance through its role in space exploration. Soviet cosmonauts landing on the surrounding steppe would return to Arkalyk before travelling onward to the Baikonur spaceport.
Over its history, Arkalyk served twice as the administrative capital of the former Torgay Region before the region was dissolved and its territory divided between Kostanai and Akmola. Following economic downturns in the 1990s, the local population contracted sharply from 65,000 residents down to lower numbers recorded in later censuses, such as 28,169 in 2009. This period of migration led to the abandonment of several city districts, prompting municipal initiatives to relocate residents closer to the older city center to consolidate utilities.
Visitors and researchers are drawn by the region's complex industrial heritage and vast geological wealth. In addition to bauxite fields like Lower Ashut, Ushtobe, Northern, Upper Ashut, and Aktas, the surrounding territory contains significant deposits of refractory clay, lead at the Jana-Arkalyk field, nephritis at Akzhal, white marble at Akbulak, black marble at Agirjal, and therapeutic mineral waters. Arkalyk also serves as a local center for education, housing institutions such as the Arkalyk Pedagogical Institute named after I. Altynsarin, medical and humanities colleges, and the Kazakh-Turkish High School.
Travel to Arkalyk is supported by regional road and rail connections. The city serves as a terminal railway station on the branch line extending from Esil and Derzhavinsk. Tarmac roads connect Arkalyk to Kostanay, while unpaved routes link it to Zhezkazgan, though these dirt roads become muddy during wet weather. Arkalyk Airport, located 6 kilometers northeast of the city center, previously handled scheduled regional flights and continues to see occasional use during spaceflight search and rescue operations.
