Why Aurangabad

Officially designated as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aurangabad is a major city and administrative center located in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, India. Situated upon the hilly elevated terrain of the Deccan Traps and encircled by the Ajanta mountain range, it stands as one of the state's most populous urban areas. The city is widely recognized for its rich heritage and historic defense structures, earning it the nickname the City of Gates due to the remaining entry points, such as the Delhi Gate, built around its historic borders.

The area surrounding the city possesses a deep historical legacy, having contained ancient capitals of the Satavahana and Yadava dynasties. Established initially as Khadki in 1610 by Malik Ambar, an Ethiopian military leader, the settlement was later named Fatehnagar before being annexed by the Mughal Empire. In 1653, the Mughal prince Aurangzeb renamed the city Aurangabad, later transferring his imperial court there in 1681. It subsequently served as the initial capital of the Asaf Jahi dynasty's Hyderabad State until 1763. Following Indian independence and the integration of Hyderabad State, the region was officially incorporated into Maharashtra in 1960.

As a prominent travel hub, the city provides access to a wealth of historical and cultural landmarks. Located on its outskirts are the ancient Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, both designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Within and around the city itself, visitors can explore the rock-cut Aurangabad Caves, the hilltop Devagiri Fort, and the grand tomb complex of Bibi Ka Maqbara. Additional points of interest include Grishneshwar Temple, the Jama Mosque, the historic water mill known as Panchakki, Himayat Bagh, and Salim Ali Lake.

In addition to its heritage appeal, the city maintains an active industrial identity. Long celebrated as a production center for cotton textiles and fine embroidered silk fabrics, it is also home to the country's first greenfield industrial smart city, the Aurangabad Industrial City. For visitors, the region experiences a semiarid climate with seasonal monsoon rainfall between June and September. The most comfortable period for travel is during the winter months from October to February, when temperatures are milder.
