Why Bahraich
Bahraich is a city and municipal board situated in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Lying at an average elevation of 126 meters (413 feet), the city is positioned along the Saryu River, which flows as a tributary to the Ghaghara River. It sits roughly 125 kilometers (78 miles) northeast of Lucknow, the state capital. The surrounding district shares boundaries with several other Indian districts, including Barabanki, Gonda, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shravasti, and Sitapur, while also featuring an international border alongside Nepal.
According to the 2011 Indian Census, Bahraich recorded a population of 186,223 residents, including 97,653 males and 88,570 females, residing across 30,460 households. Religiously, Muslims constitute the majority of the local population at 56 percent, followed by Hindus at 42 percent, alongside smaller numbers of Sikh, Jain, Christian, and Buddhist residents. The local broadcast media includes an All India Radio FM relay station, Akashvani Bahraich, operating on the 100.1 frequency.
The city experiences a warm humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers running from April through July, during which temperatures frequently range between 40 °C and 47 °C (104 °F to 117 °F). A rainy season occurs from July to mid-September, driven primarily by the southwest monsoon winds, with occasional frontal rainfall taking place in January. Annual rainfall averages approximately 1,900 centimeters (750 inches). Winter temperatures typically reach maximum highs around 25 °C (77 °F) with minimums dropping between −1 °C and 7 °C (30 °F to 45 °F), while fog is common from late December until late January.
Bahraich features comprehensive road connections to numerous destinations across Uttar Pradesh and nearby regions via state transport and private bus services. Buses to Lucknow depart every 15 minutes, and National Highway 927 provides direct access toward Barabanki and the state capital. The city is served by the Bahraich railway station (code BRK), which contains three platforms accommodating both broad-gauge and meter-gauge lines. Rail links connect to Jarwal Road on the Delhi–Barauni route, located 55 kilometers (34 miles) from the district headquarters, with regional rail infrastructure operating diesel locomotives.
