Why Balıkesir
Balıkesir is a Turkish city situated within the country's Marmara region. Serving as the administrative seat of Balıkesir Province—a metropolitan municipality—the broader provincial area is home to over 1.25 million residents, with more than 300,000 living within the urban districts of Altıeylül and Karesi. Positioned as the primary hub for the historical Mysia region since the thirteenth century, the city offers visitors a rich tapestry of Anatolian history.
The history of Balıkesir traces back to the Roman settlement of Hadrianutherae, established around 124 AD by Emperor Hadrian following a successful bear hunt in the area. The original settlement, which included a castle, homestead, and stud farm, was located near the site of the modern sports stadium. Roman and pre-Byzantine rulers utilized the retreat for hunting and vacations. Over time, the town fell into neglect and became known as Palaiokastron, or "Old Castle." Turkic groups arriving from Central Asia renamed the site Balukiser, referencing the remaining fortifications. Karasi Bey officially established the town in 1297, making it one of Anatolia's early Turkish-founded cities and the capital of the Karasi principality prior to its Ottoman annexation in 1345.
Throughout its later history, Balıkesir survived several major disruptions. A powerful earthquake in 1898 flattened most of the city, leaving only fifty-one structures standing. During the Turkish War of Independence, Balıkesir served as a central base for local Turkish militias before being liberated in September 1922 following a three-year occupation. Another significant event took place in August 1950, when a massive fire swept through the commercial center, destroying nearly five hundred shops and prompting major reconstruction efforts.
Among the city's key architectural highlights are its historical Ottoman mosques. The Yildirim Mosque, built in 1388, is the oldest remaining Ottoman structure in the city. Visitors can also see the Zaganos Pasha Mosque complex, erected in 1461 by the Grand Vizier to Mehmet the Conqueror, where the main mosque and historic baths remain. Sports enthusiasts recognize the city as the home of Balıkesirspor, a football club founded in 1966 that plays at the 13,732-seat Balıkesir Atatürk Stadium.
Balıkesir features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with temperate oceanic elements. Summers are typically hot and dry, while winter months are cool and rainy, bringing frequent frosts and periodic snowfall. Moving further inland toward the east and south, the continental climate intensifies, leading to colder temperatures and increased winter snow.
