Why Barreiras
Barreiras is a major urban, political, and economic hub situated in the western region of Bahia, Brazil. Positioned within the Rio Grande basin, the municipality covers nearly 8,000 square kilometers of mostly level terrain characterized by a dry climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The Rio Grande flows through the city toward the São Francisco River, joined by local waterways such as the Rio de Janeiro, Rio Branco, and Rio de Ondas. Acting as a vital transportation junction between several Brazilian regions, the city lies 853 kilometers from Salvador and 622 kilometers from Brasília, connected by federal highways BR-242 and BR-020, as well as an airport providing flights to major cities.
Indigenous Acroás and Chacriabás communities originally lived along the local riverbanks before disappearing due to conflict and illness. European settlement expanded as cattle herds moved into unexplored interior territories, leading to a small riverside community near rocky river barriers known as barreiras. By the 19th century, river trade in agricultural products, leather, and natural rubber drove local growth, culminating in full city status by 1902. Following an industrial era launched by an early hydroelectric plant in 1928, the area suffered a period of isolation in the mid-20th century before being revitalized by highway construction, government irrigation initiatives, and modern agricultural development.
The surrounding natural environment features several notable rivers and waterfalls. The Rio de Janeiro originates near the Serra Geral, carving through savanna landscapes to form the 36-meter-high Acaba Vidas Waterfall—enclosed by ferns, mature trees, and mist—as well as the Redondo Waterfall, where trails lined with buriti palms lead to a clear swimming basin. Nearby, the Rio Branco runs into the Rio Grande, which offers over 500 kilometers of navigable waters downstream to its junction with the São Francisco River.
Local rivers serve as primary recreational spaces for visitors and residents alike. The clear, wavy waters and rapids of the Rio de Ondas make it a popular spot for canoeing and floating on tire tubes. Its riverbanks host local resorts, recreational clubs, and small farms. Supported by modern infrastructure, transportation networks, and a diverse agricultural economy centered on grains, fruits, coffee, and livestock, Barreiras functions as a key destination in Bahia's interior.
