You will find the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa occupying the entire north side of the city's main square, the Plaza de Armas. Built from white volcanic stone known as sillar, this iconic Catholic church serves as the base for the archbishop and metropolitan council. Originally founded in 1540 and designed in part by architect Lucas Poblete, the building has endured a resilient history of destruction and reconstruction due to major earthquakes, fires, and volcanic eruptions.
When you visit, you can admire its Neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance design, highlighted by seventy columns with Corinthian capitals, two tall Renaissance bell towers, and sweeping façade arches. Inside its three naves, you can see a striking main altar made of Carrara marble, crafted by Felipe Maratillo. Look out for the ornate French Neo-Gothic pulpit, carved from oak by Buisine-Rigot in Lille, which dramatically depicts Christ defeating the serpent.
You will also discover a massive Belgian music organ—celebrated as one of South America's largest—and precious gold and silver treasures, including monstrances adorned with gold and diamonds. Do not miss the Chapel of the Lord of Great Power, a space frequently visited by local residents.
