Bergenhus Fortress 🇳🇴

Located right at the entrance of Bergen harbour, Bergenhus Fortress is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications. When you step onto these grounds, you are walking through layers of history dating from the 1240s through World War II. In medieval times, when Bergen served as the capital of Norway, this site was a royal seat featuring a cathedral, churches, and a monastery.

Today, you can explore prominent historic buildings that remain open to the public, including the grand Haakon's Hall and the formidable Rosenkrantz Tower. Haakon's Hall, constructed in the mid-13th century in Gothic style, stands as Norway's largest secular medieval building, famously restored after severe World War II damage and decorated today with discreet tapestries. Nearby, Rosenkrantz Tower incorporates a 1270s royal apartment tower expanded in the 1560s to feature dungeons, governor's residential quarters, and top-floor cannon positions.

You can also spot the memorial stone marking the former altar of Christ Church, where several Norwegian kings were buried. Administered by the Bergen City Museum while remaining under Royal Norwegian Navy command, the fortress grounds—including the central Koengen area—frequently double as a public feast hall and concert venue for visitors to enjoy.
