Why Boaco
Boaco is the capital city of the Boaco Department in Nicaragua's central region. Located approximately 88 kilometers east of the national capital, Managua, the city sits within an irregular, mountainous landscape at an average elevation of 360 meters above sea level. Due to its steep terrain, Boaco is widely known as the "Two-Storey City" (Ciudad de Dos Pisos), a nickname inspired by the fact that only its central park and baseball field present flat ground. The highest point in the surrounding municipality is the peak of El Cerro de la Vieja, which reaches an altitude of 1,020 meters.
The municipality has a layered history stemming from indigenous Zumo and Aztec roots, with its name translating to "Place of the Enchanters." Originally founded further east as Old Boaco (Boaco Viejo) by Spanish settlers from Guatemala, the original site was destroyed during a 1749 raid by Zambo, Caribe, and Mosquito indigenous groups supported by British colonists. Survivors relocated to a lowland area called Boaquito before moving to the current elevated location between 1752 and 1772 to avoid lowland flooding and seasonal illnesses. Boaco was formally designated as the capital of its namesake department in 1935.
Boaco serves as an essential economic hub for the surrounding agricultural lands, playing a significant role in Nicaragua's production and export of beef and dairy products. Transport links connecting Boaco to Managua via paved highways have helped expand local commerce, bringing banking, fueling stations, and improved infrastructure to the area. Public buses regularly connect the city with the national capital and neighboring towns.
Cultural sights in Boaco include several historical collections, such as the Fernando Buitrago Morales Public Library—established in 1979—along with the Boaco Museum of Anthropology, the Municipal Museum, and a private museum. The city has a rich artistic tradition and has produced notable Nicaraguan literary figures and painters. Each year starting on July 25, the city holds local festivities dedicated to its patron saint, Apostle Saint James, featuring traditional performances by Los Bailantes, a dance group rooted in 17th-century heritage.
The climate in the region varies between tropical forest and wooded tropical grasslands. Annual precipitation ranges from 1,200 to 2,000 millimeters, with typical temperatures averaging between 27 °C and 30 °C during the warmest months and dropping to around 18 °C in December.
