Why Bouna

Situated in northeastern Ivory Coast, Bouna is a commune, sub-prefecture, and administrative capital of the Bouna Department as well as the Bounkani Region within Zanzan District. Serving as a primary urban hub for the Lobi ethnic group, the surrounding sub-prefecture recorded a population of 94,883 residents in 2021. The region features a landscape positioned in close proximity to both the Ghanaian frontier and Comoé National Park.

Originally established as a Koulango and Dyula settlement, Bouna transformed into the center of a unified kingdom during the late 16th century following its conquest by King Naa Zokuli and Dagomba prince Darigu Damda. Their son, Bounkani, established the local royal dynasty. Operating as a centralized state governed by military districts under royal control, the kingdom prospered through local gold resources. Over time, Bouna developed into an influential center for Islamic education, granting refuge to religious figures following the downfall of Bighu and providing sanctuary to Muslim scholars expelled from the Ashanti court in the 1820s.

The late 19th century brought significant geopolitical upheaval to Bouna. Forces from the Wassoulou Empire, led by Saranken Mori under Samori Ture, seized the town in December 1896 to secure trade routes to the Gold Coast. Subsequent military clashes involved British forces under Henderson, who suffered defeat nearby, and a French column under Captain Paul Braulot, whose death near the city in August 1897 renewed conflict that culminated in the fall of the Wassoulou Empire. In modern history, Bouna served as a key base for the Forces Nouvelles during the 2002 attempted coup d'état, causing widespread hardship for local residents during the conflict's initial phase.

Visitors traveling to Bouna and its surrounding countryside can observe the distinctive vernacular architecture of the Lobi people, characterized by traditional adobe compounds built in a fortress style. The broader sub-prefecture encompasses over one hundred rural villages that showcase these regional building techniques.

Transport access to Bouna includes its own local airfield featuring an unpaved landing strip. This bush airport primarily serves transport needs for the United Nations.
