Why Brazzaville

Brazzaville serves as the administrative, financial, and political capital of the Republic of the Congo. Situated along the northern bank of the Congo River just below the expanse of Pool Malebo, it sits roughly 506 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The city occupies a relatively flat terrain surrounded by vast plains at an elevation of 317 meters. Uniquely, it sits directly across the water from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making them the only two national capitals in the world situated within sight of each other on opposing riverbanks.

The region was originally home to the indigenous Bateke settlement of Ncuna as well as the precolonial trading hubs of Mfwa and Mpila. The modern city was established in September 1880 by the Italian-born explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza following a treaty with the local Tio ruler. It later served as the official capital of French Equatorial Africa and temporarily functioned as the de facto capital of Free France during World War II. After gaining administrative distinction over the decades, the municipality developed into distinct historic neighborhoods such as Bacongo and Poto-Poto.

Recognized by UNESCO as a designated City of Music, Brazzaville offers several architectural and cultural attractions. Notable landmarks include the Nabemba Tower, the Congressional Palace, and the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Mausoleum, alongside a residence built by architect Roger Erell for Charles de Gaulle. Visitors can also explore the historic Basilica of Sainte-Anne-du-Congo, the Marien Ngouabi Mausoleum, the Brazzaville Zoo, and the famous Poto-Poto School of Painting.

The city functions as a primary inland port on the Congo River, handling shipments of regional commodities like rubber, timber, and agricultural goods. Downriver, the dramatic Livingstone Falls prevent water travel to the ocean, establishing the city as a critical transit point where river freight transitions to rail. Major international institutions are based here, including the regional headquarters for the World Health Organization for Africa.

Brazzaville experiences a tropical wet and dry climate with stable year-round temperatures, marked by a rainy season from October to May and a dry period from June to September. Travel into the city is served by Maya-Maya Airport, located centrally, which connects to domestic, European, African, and Middle Eastern destinations. Ground and river travel are supported by the Congo-Ocean Railway linking to Pointe-Noire, passenger ferries operating across to Kinshasa and upriver toward Bangui, and local green-and-white taxis.
