Why Cáceres

Situated along the banks of the Paraguay River, Cáceres is a broad municipality located in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Encompassing an expansive territorial footprint of 24,000 square kilometers, this municipal center serves as a notable regional hub and recorded a population of nearly 90,000 residents in 2022.

The area holds historical importance as the official launching site of the Roosevelt–Rondon Scientific Expedition. Today, it operates as a major educational center for the region, housing the administrative headquarters of Mato Grosso State University. The institution offers thirteen undergraduate programs alongside three postgraduate courses. International connections are also represented within the city through a Bolivian consulate.

Cáceres is recognized for its surrounding natural environment and proximity to diverse ecological preserves. A section of the Serra das Araras Ecological Station lies within its municipal borders, as does part of the Taiamã Ecological Station. Additionally, the municipality encompasses Guirá State Park, a protected conservation area established in 2002 that spans 114,000 hectares.

Water-based recreation plays a prominent role in local culture, centered around the Paraguay River. Each September, the town attracts visitors and anglers as it hosts a popular annual fishing festival.
