Why Campo Grande

Campo Grande serves as the capital and largest city of Mato Grosso do Sul, positioned in the central-western region of Brazil. Designed with broad, tree-bordered avenues and vast parkland, the urban area sits within the Cerrado, a tropical savanna ecosystem featuring grasslands and medium-height trees. The municipality encompasses protected natural environments such as the 178-hectare Matas do Segredo State Park and the 135-hectare Prosa State Park. The initial settlement arose near the Serra de Maracaju cliffs at the confluence of the Prosa and Segredo streams, waterways whose courses now parallel two primary urban avenues.

The settlement was established in 1877 under the name Santo Antônio de Campo Grande by farmers migrating from Minas Gerais following the Paraguayan War. It originally functioned as an overland stopover for travelers journeying between southeastern Brazil and northern Mato Grosso. Recognized as a municipality in 1899, the town grew rapidly after the completion of a rail link in the early twentieth century and the establishment of the Western Brazilian Army Headquarters. In 1977, Campo Grande became the capital of the newly created state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Over time, the local population developed into a diverse cultural mixture comprising Indigenous peoples, Afro-Brazilians, migrants from southern and eastern Brazil, and immigrant communities from Japan, Paraguay, the Middle East, and Europe.

The city experiences a tropical savanna climate characterized by warm, humid summers and a distinct dry season running from June through September. January brings the highest temperatures and rainfall averages, while July offers cooler, sunny conditions with occasional near-freezing temperatures at night. Brief, heavy rainfall can cause intermittent localized flooding. Transportation infrastructure includes an airport shared with the Campo Grande Air Force Base, a freight railway network, and three major federal highways connecting the capital to neighboring states, the Paraguayan and Bolivian borders, and the Amazon region.

Local economic activity is concentrated primarily in commercial trade and services, alongside significant agricultural operations that produce soybeans, rice, manioc, sugar cane, and processed beef for export. The city is also an educational center housing several higher learning institutions, including the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul. Cultural events include the annual Festas Juninas winter celebrations featuring regional foods, bonfires, music, and dances, as well as the Campo Grande Film Festival, which highlights independent Brazilian and international cinema every January and February.

Recreational features in the municipality include the Estádio Universitário Pedro Pedrossian, a 45,000-capacity football stadium locally known as Morenão. Motorsports are accommodated at the Orlando Moura International Autodrome and the Ayrton Senna kart track. Every October, Parque das Nações Indígenas hosts the Volta das Nações, a 21-kilometer mini-marathon drawing thousands of international and regional participants.
