Why Cần Thơ
Cần Thơ is the third largest centrally-governed municipality in Vietnam, situated within the Mekong Delta region. Home to over four million residents, the city expanded following a 2025 administrative reorganization that merged Hậu Giang and Sóc Trăng provinces into the municipality. Cần Thơ is defined by its extensive network of waterways, including the Hậu River alongside the Cần Thơ River and the Thốt Nốt and Ô Môn canals. Geographically, it shares borders with the provinces of Cà Mau, An Giang, Vĩnh Long, and Đồng Tháp, while bounding the East Sea to the south.
The region features a tropical wet and dry climate characterized by an average annual temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, 83 percent humidity, and 1,800 millimeters of rainfall. A rainy season spans from May through November, followed by a dry period between December and April. Thanks to its rich hydrological environment and rural agricultural landscape, the surrounding countryside yields a diverse array of tropical fruits, including durian, dragon fruit, mangosteen, rambutan, jackfruit, longan, pomelo, mango, guava, and bananas.
Commerce and daily life in Cần Thơ are closely tied to its riverways. The municipality is widely recognized for its floating markets, such as Cái Răng and Phong Điền, where merchants trade goods directly from boats on the water. Beyond river excursions, visitors explore these waterway networks alongside a traditional bánh tráng rice paper-making village, canal tours, and scenic spots like Sơn Islet, Mỹ Khánh tourist village, and the Bằng Lăng Stork Sanctuary located in the Thốt Nốt district.
Urban landmarks concentrated around the central Ninh Kiều district include Ninh Kiều Wharf, the pedestrian bridge, Cần Thơ Bridge, and the bustling Tây Đô Night Market. Cultural and historical points of interest comprise the Cần Thơ Museum, the historic 1870 Bình Thủy house showcasing a blend of French and Asian architecture, and sites such as the Hùng Kings Temple, Bình Thủy Temple, and Thiền viện Trúc Lâm Phương Nam. Sacred places across the city also include the Pitu Khôsa Răngsây Khmer Pagoda, Nam Nhã Pagoda, Ông Chinese Pagoda, and Cần Thơ Cathedral.
Reaching Cần Thơ is convenient via multiple transit modes. Travelers using National Highway 1A from Ho Chi Minh City can cover the 170-kilometer route in approximately three to four hours during the day. Transfers from Phú Quốc island can be made using ferries paired with buses or taxis. Additionally, Cần Thơ International Airport sits nine kilometers northwest of the city center, offering direct flights to domestic destinations like Hanoi, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Ha Long, Phu Quoc, and Con Dao.
