Step into the historic memory of Guatemala City by learning about the Carrera Theater, a lost architectural treasure of the nation's Republican era. Originally commissioned in 1852 by President Rafael Carrera at the advice of his mistress Josefa Silva, this majestic classic Greek-style building stood in the Old Central Square. As the first monumental structure built during a peaceful period of the republic, it featured impressive Greek façades and an elegant lobby designed by German expert José Beckers.

Visitors in the late nineteenth century marveled at its grand design, which was once surrounded by fragrant orange trees, brilliant flowering plants, statues, and refreshing fountains. Renamed the National Theater after the Liberal Reform of 1871, it underwent significant remodeling in 1892 to mark the fourth centennial of Christopher Columbus's arrival in America. This renovation added modern gardens, a bust of poet José Batres Montúfar, and a donated statue of Columbus, leading to its historic name, the Colón Theater.

Though destroyed by devastating earthquakes in 1917–18 and ultimately demolished in 1923 to make way for a street market, understanding this former jewel offers you deep insight into Guatemala's rich historic landscape.
