Why Castel del Monte

Castel del Monte is a 13th-century citadel located atop a hill in the municipality of Andria, situated within the Apulia region of southeastern Italy. Commissioned in the 1240s by King Frederick II on land inherited from his mother, Constance of Sicily, the structure stands at an elevation of 540 meters near the monastery of Santa Maria del Monte. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as an exceptional piece of medieval military architecture, the landmark is widely celebrated for its unique shape and is depicted on Italy's one-cent Euro coin.

The fortress is defined by its unusual octagonal geometry, comprising an eight-sided central courtyard enclosed by an octagonal prism with eight matching corner towers. Built across two levels, the interior features eight vaulted rooms per floor, with spiral staircases set inside three of the towers. The primary entrance faces east and displays Greco-Roman architectural influences, including a pediment supported by slender fluted pilasters. While the castle lacks a moat or drawbridge, archaeological evidence suggests it was originally enclosed by a protective curtain wall.

Over the centuries, the site fulfilled several roles, transitioning from a fortification into a state prison under Charles I of Anjou and later serving as a refuge during plague epidemics. By the 18th century, much of its interior marble lining, columns, and decorative furnishings were looted or removed by the House of Bourbon for construction elsewhere. The Italian State purchased the derelict property in 1876 and initiated restoration work in 1928. During World War II, the United States military used the castle as a secret navigational station, and scientific analysis of nearby soil in the 1950s led to the discovery of bacterial compounds utilized in chemotherapy.

The territory surrounding the hill is designated as the Castel del Monte DOC wine area, producing red, rosé, and white wines. Local viticulture incorporates grape varieties such as Uva di Troia, Bombino nero, and Pampanuto into regional blends and varietals, adhering to strict guidelines regarding harvest yields, minimum alcohol content, and oak aging for Riserva designations.
