Perched dramatically in central Naples in front of Piazza Municipio, Castel Nuovo—commonly known as the Maschio Angioino—is an iconic medieval fortress and historic royal seat. First commissioned in 1279 under Charles I of Anjou and later rebuilt in Catalan Gothic style under King Alfonso V of Aragon, this sprawling estate served as the center of royal power for Angevin, Aragonese, and Spanish rulers until 1815.
When you visit today, you will encounter an impressive trapezoidal complex anchored by huge cylindrical defensive towers and a grand Triumphal Arc main gate, an outstanding masterpiece of Neapolitan Renaissance architecture. Inside, the complex houses a civic museum spanning the first and second floors, alongside the historical Palatine Chapel, which famously featured frescoes by the master painter Giotto.
