Castle del Príncipe 🇨🇺

Perched atop Loma de Aróstegui in Havana, Cuba, the Castillo del Príncipe (Castle of the Prince) is a massive military fort inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982. Built between 1767 and 1779 by engineer Silvestre Abarca y Aznar after the British occupation exposed Havana's vulnerabilities, this site helped transform the city into the most fortified location in the Americas. The structure features an irregular pentagon design complete with two bastions, two semi-bastions, a V-shaped redan, deep trenches, mine galleries, a large water cistern, and brick-built tunnel systems once armed with 60 cannons. Historically, the fortress housed up to 1,000 soldiers before serving as Havana's most important prison from colonial times through the 1970s.
