Central Great Mosque 🇹🇷

Located in İlkadım, Samsun, Turkey, the Great Mosque (Büyük Cami) is one of the city's most beautiful and historic landmarks. The original wooden mosque was first built in the 1300s during the Seljuk period by military commander Hidir Bey. After a catastrophic fire swept through Samsun in 1869, the current structure was redesigned by Batumlu Haci Ali using cut stone, reopening for public use in 1884. Because the construction was funded by the mother of Sultan Abdul Aziz, locals also fondly refer to it as the Valide (mother) Mosque.

When you visit, you will appreciate a striking historic design set within a large, tree-filled courtyard. Approach the western frontage to see its two large minarets, each crafted with simple stonework and featured balconies. Inside, large arched windows fill the main prayer space with an abundance of natural light, illuminating an ornate central chandelier. Look up at the impressive central dome to admire its detailed floral and geometric patterns.

Conveniently situated adjacent to Saathane Square and the Samsun Clock Tower, it offers a peaceful, authentic look into Samsun's rich past. It is also easily visible from Ataturk Boulevard.

You can easily reach the mosque by taking the Samsun Tram directly to the Büyük Cami Station.
