Why Chakdaha

Chakdaha is an urban municipal city situated in the Kalyani subdivision of Nadia district, located in the southern portion of West Bengal, India. Positioned at an elevation of 11 meters (36 feet), the town lies within the low-lying Ranaghat-Chakdaha Plain. This geographic region is part of a vast alluvial expanse created by the Ganges-Bhagirathi river system, with the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River flowing along the western border of the subdivision.

The city is situated roughly 62 kilometers north of West Bengal's capital, Kolkata, making it easily reachable along National Highway 12. Travelling between Kolkata and Chakdaha by road generally takes approximately two hours. Public transportation links are frequent, featuring economical daytime buses running every 20 minutes from Madhyamgram, a locality near Kolkata.

Chakdaha has a recorded educational background extending into the nineteenth century. A Middle English school established to the west of the local railway station on Sinha family land in Kanthalpuli became a High English school called the Benimadhab Institution in 1907. In 1910, following a ten-thousand-rupee donation from Ramlal Singha, the institution was renamed Chakdaha Ramlal Academy. Higher education is provided by Chakdaha College, founded in 1979 and affiliated with the University of Kalyani.

As a key urban center in Nadia district's most urbanized subdivision, Chakdaha encompasses a wider urban agglomeration that incorporates the primary municipal area alongside several census towns, such as Parbbatipur, Gopalpur, Belgharia, Punglia, and Lalpur. Local civic and community care is supported by institutions like the Chakdah State General Hospital, a major medical facility offering 500 beds.

Cultural activities in the municipality are frequently hosted at community facilities including Sampriti Manch and Chakdaha Pouro Mukto Mancha. The local calendar features large winter cultural fairs, locally referred to as melas, as well as well-attended annual flower exhibitions. Literature and reading are celebrated through the Chakdaha Book Fair, which has taken place annually since 2014. The town is also distinguished as the home of Jhulan Goswami, a prominent former member of the Indian women's cricket team.
