Why Chortkiv
Chortkiv is a city situated along the banks of the Seret River in western Ukraine. Located within Ternopil Oblast, it functions as the administrative seat of Chortkiv Raion and the surrounding urban hromada. Positioned in the northern portion of the historic Galician Podolia region, the city today operates as a regional hub for local administration, commercial activity, and small-scale manufacturing.
The history of Chortkiv spans several centuries, with its first recorded mention dating to 1522 when King Sigismund I the Old granted ownership to Jerzy Czortkowski. Over the years, the settlement experienced significant historical events, including destruction during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, a period of Ottoman rule in the late 17th century as part of the Podolia Eyalet, and over a century under Austro-Hungarian governance. In the 20th century, control shifted between Poland, Soviet authorities, and Nazi Germany before Chortkiv ultimately joined independent Ukraine in 1991. Historically, the city was also a notable Hasidic Jewish shtetl.
A primary architectural landmark in Chortkiv is a historic fortress originally constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries. The city is also home to several notable religious structures. Among these are preserved wooden churches, including the Church of the Dormition built in 1584 and the Church of the Ascension dating to 1630. Visitors can also view brick and stone places of worship such as the 1610 Saint Stanislaus Church, which features a 40-meter tower, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul.
Chortkiv's architectural heritage further extends to its Jewish community sites, which feature two historic synagogues: a main synagogue from the 1680s and a new synagogue built in 1909 that was designed by architect Hans Geldkremer. Religious landmarks in the area also comprise several chapels, including Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of the Cross, along with active monastic institutions such as the Convent of the Holy Family. Outside the main town area lies the site of the former Chortkiv Air Base.
