Originally commissioned as the "Evangelische Kirche für Tsingtau" during the German concession era, construction on the Protestant church began in April 1908 and finished in October 1910.
The structure's design was initially created by German architect Curt Rothkegel, whose modern bell tower concept was subsequently refined by Paul Richter and Hachmeister. Today, this impressive historic sanctuary spans nearly 1,298 square meters (13,966 square feet) and is built to accommodate about 1,400 visitors and worshippers.
When you visit, you will see a grand house of worship that has survived major historic shifts, including World War I, the Pacific War, military confiscation, and a 30-year period of closure before officially reopening to the public in November 1980.
