Why Christmas Island
Christmas Island is an Australian external territory located in the Indian Ocean, situated approximately 350 kilometres south of Java and Sumatra and about 1,550 kilometres northwest of the Australian mainland. Spanning an area of 135 square kilometres, the island is widely recognized for its unique natural heritage. Due to its extreme geographic isolation and a long history of minimal human disturbance, the territory features a remarkably high concentration of endemic flora and fauna, making it an area of key interest for naturalists and scientific research.
The island’s geography is defined by a 138.9-kilometre coastline surrounded by steep sea cliffs that rise abruptly to a central inland plateau. Elevations across the terrain range from sea level to a maximum height of 361 metres at Murray Hill. The landscape consists predominantly of lush tropical rainforest, with primary monsoonal forests covering much of the island. Approximately 63 percent of the territory is set aside and protected as part of Christmas Island National Park.
First sighted by European sailors in 1615, the island was officially named by Captain William Mynors when he passed it on Christmas Day in 1643. The earliest recorded landing occurred in 1688 along the western coast at a site known as The Dales. Permanent human habitation began in the late 19th century following the discovery of rich phosphate deposits, which prompted Great Britain to annex the territory in 1888. After enduring Japanese occupation during World War II and a subsequent administrative period under Singapore, sovereignty over the island was formally transferred to Australia in 1958.
Today, the island is home to a small, multicultural community primarily residing in settlements along its northern shoreline. The main town and primary harbor is Flying Fish Cove, also known simply as The Settlement, while other residential areas include Poon Saan, Drumsite, and Silver City. The population reflects a blend of Straits Chinese, Malay, European, and Indian heritage. This cultural diversity is visible throughout the island's localized communities, from the Buddhist traditions in Poon Saan to the Sunni Muslim shoreline water village established by Malay residents.
Visitors to the island can experience its rich cultural tapestry, explore historical mining settlements, and venture into the expansive national park to observe its distinctive tropical ecosystems, steep coastal cliffs, and pristine forest trails.
