When you explore Plzeň in the Czech Republic, you can step into history at the Church of All Saints (Kostel Všech svatých), one of the oldest churches in the area. Before St. Bartholomew's Cathedral was completed, this site served as the main parish church for early local settlements.
Originally constructed in the 13th century in a Romanesque style, it was rebuilt in Gothic fashion during the late 14th century and later expanded with a 1743 Baroque entrance hall. As you approach the exterior, you will admire its sandstone block walls, diagonal buttresses, and main southern entrance featuring late Baroque rounded windows with decorative pilasters. Look closely at the presbytery to view four stunning Gothic windows adorned with flamboyant, flame-like tracery, contrasting with the pointed windows of the nave.
Inside, you can appreciate the nave’s groin vault ending in decorative cantilevers, a 16th-century high choir with its spiral staircase, and a massive pointed triumphal arch separating the nave from the presbytery. You will also see a figured rib vault above the presbytery and a unique jumping vault within the sacristy. Today, this resilient landmark is maintained by the local Franciscans.
