If you are exploring the heritage of Minnesota, a visit to the historic Church of St. Hubertus offers a meaningful look into local history. Founded in 1877 by Father Aloysius Wewer, the congregation played a pivotal role in shaping the area, which was originally named St. Hubertus before becoming Chanhassen.

When you visit, you will be standing before a landmark that symbolizes the Franciscan brotherhood that platted and grew this early German Catholic settlement. Built in 1887, this historic structure is actually the third building used by the parish. It was constructed by master builder John Geiser, who created around 30 churches during his lifetime and hand-carved the altar inside. Because of its deep roots in community planning, development, exploration, and settlement, the property earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Over the decades, the parish expanded into newer facilities, including buildings erected in 1976 and 1997. As a visitor today, you are observing a pivotal moment in local preservation. As of late 2025, the community convened town hall meetings to determine the ultimate fate of this historic parish structure, weighing a full restoration against demolition.
