Why Colombes
Located 10.6 kilometers northwest of central Paris, Colombes is a French commune situated within the capital's suburban ring. In 2019, it was recorded as the 53rd largest city in France. Administratively, the commune is divided into two distinct sectors, consisting of Colombes-1 in the north and Colombes-2 in the south.
The city's name originates from the Latin word for column. This name is believed to refer to either a megalithic column used in ancient druidic rituals that stood in the area until its destruction during the French Revolution, or the structural pillars of a ruined Gallo-Roman villa. The municipality underwent major territorial shifts around the turn of the twentieth century. Seventeen percent of its land was split off in 1896 to create the commune of Bois-Colombes, and another nineteen percent was detached in 1910 to form La Garenne-Colombes, leaving the present municipality at roughly two-thirds of its original size.
A central landmark in Colombes is the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir. Originally constructed in 1907, this stadium hosted the opening ceremony and numerous events for the 1924 Summer Olympics. Its capacity was later expanded to 60,000 spectators for the 1938 World Cup. Following the 1972 restoration of Paris's Parc des Princes, the venue lost much of its prominence, leading to the removal of three grandstands during the 1990s. Subsequent developments brought the stadium's capacity to 14,000. It served as the home venue for the Racing 92 rugby club until November 2017, remains the home ground for the RCF Paris football team, and was selected to host field hockey events during the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Visitors to the area can also see the local Hôtel de Ville, which was completed in 1923. In terms of international outreach, Colombes has maintained official twin town relationships with Frankenthal, Germany, since 1958, and Legnano, Italy, since 1964.
Colombes features an oceanic climate with an annual average temperature of 12.5 °C. Average monthly temperatures are highest in July at approximately 20.6 °C and lowest in January at around 5.0 °C. The area receives an average annual rainfall of 623.0 millimeters, with May experiencing the wettest conditions. The highest temperature ever recorded in the commune was 40.9 °C on August 6, 2003, while the lowest recorded temperature was −15.0 °C on January 17, 1985.
Transportation to and throughout the commune is supported by four stations on the Transilien Paris-Saint-Lazare suburban rail network. These stops include the Colombes, Le Stade, La Garenne-Colombes, and Les Vallées railway stations.
