Colossi of Memnon 🇪🇬

When you step onto the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, Egypt, you will stand before the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These two massive stone statues depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III seated on his throne, gazing east toward the river. Built around 1350 BC to guard the pharaoh's grand mortuary temple—once the largest complex in Ancient Egypt—these 60-foot-tall quartzite sandstone giants weigh approximately 720 tons each.

Although earthquakes and time have damaged their features above the waist, visiting them allows you to experience thousands of years of fascinating history. Look closely at the base of the northern statue to discover 107 ancient Roman-era inscriptions written in Greek and Latin by early tourists, including poetry by Julia Balbilla recording her visit with Emperor Hadrian in 130 CE. Ancient visitors journeyed here to hear the famous "singing" northern colossus, which reportedly emitted mysterious musical sounds at dawn after an earthquake cracked it in 27 BC.

Alongside the main pharaoh statues, you can see carved figures of Amenhotep III's wife Tiye, his mother Mutemwiya, and side panels showing the Nile god Hapi. It is an unforgettable, awe-inspiring stop on your Egyptian journey.
