Craig Phadrig 🇬🇧

Nestled on the western edge of Inverness, Scotland, Craig Phadrig is a scenic forested hill rising 172 metres (564 ft) above sea level. Visiting this scheduled monument offers you a captivating blend of deep historical intrigue and striking northern landscapes. As you explore the peak, you will take in views overlooking the Beauly Firth to the north and the mouth of the River Ness to the north-east.

The true centerpiece of your trip is the summit's ancient vitrified fort, a stone structure intensely affected by fire to produce a fascinating glass-like material. Today, the site is owned and managed by Forestry and Land Scotland. Historically, the fort is generally supposed to have served as the base of the Pictish king Bridei mac Maelchon, who ruled circa 554–584.

It is also commonly assumed to be the location where St Columba visited King Bridei around 565, an event famously recorded in Adomnán's Life of Columba. Archaeological excavations have uncovered 7th-century Pictish occupation evidence here, including metal-working implements and imported French pottery, while radiocarbon dating suggests its inner wall was constructed as early as the 4th century.
