Why Crete
Crete is the largest and most populous island in Greece, situated about 160 kilometers south of the Greek mainland and 100 kilometers south of the Peloponnese. Positioned between the Sea of Crete to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south, the island spans 260 kilometers from west to east. Its width varies from 60 kilometers at its broadest section down to just 12 kilometers near Ierapetra, framed by a coastline of over 1,000 kilometers. Heraklion serves as the capital and primary city, alongside major urban centers such as Chania, Rethymno, Ierapetra, Agios Nikolaos, and Sitia.
The topography is predominantly mountainous, crossed from west to east by several mountain groups. These include the Idi Range, home to the island's highest peak at Mount Ida, and the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), which feature 30 summits exceeding 2,000 meters. Nestled within these ranges are fertile plateaus like Lasithi and Omalos, deep valleys, and numerous canyons, most notably the Samaria Gorge, a World Biosphere Reserve. Natural freshwater bodies include Lake Kournas and Lake Agia in the west, while Lake Voulismeni connects directly to the sea.
Crete was home to the Minoan civilization, considered Europe's first advanced culture, and contains major historic sites such as the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos. The island subsequently experienced Mycenaean, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule before formally integrating into Greece in 1913. According to Greek mythology, Crete is the birthplace of the god Zeus, a legend linked to caverns like the Idaion and Diktaion caves. Nearby historical features include the island of Spinalonga, known for its Venetian fortifications and past history as a leper colony.
A variety of coastal landforms and outlying islets surround the main island. To the west lie Gramvousa, situated opposite the Balos lagoon, and Elafonisi. Off the southern coast, Chrysi Island shelters a substantial natural juniper forest, while the island of Gavdos constitutes Europe's southernmost point. Inland, visitors can explore notable natural features, including the Imbros, Kourtaliotiko, and Richtis gorges, the latter of which features a waterfall.
Crete mainly features a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, while areas along the southern and eastern coasts exhibit semi-arid conditions. Higher mountain peaks often receive snowfall between November and April. International travel to and from the island is facilitated through two primary air hubs: Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in Heraklion and Daskalogiannis Airport in Chania.
