Dahuting

Step back into the Eastern Han dynasty (1st century AD) at the Dahuting Han tombs, located in modern Xinmi, Henan Province. Discovered in December 1959 by construction workers, this subterranean complex contains the matching burial structures of Zhang Boya—the Governor of Hongnong Commandery—and his wife, designated as tombs M1 and M2. According to historical accounts, Emperor Guangwu (Liu Xiu) ordered M1 to be built at imperial expense to honor Zhang, who sacrificed his life wearing the future emperor's clothes to help him escape enemy troops.

Though robbed of their original furnishings prior to excavation, the tombs remain world-famous for their remarkably well-preserved stone carvings and murals. As you descend the sloping passages, you will explore three main subterranean chambers laid out along a south-north axis, connected by paved paths and separated by carved stone doors. You can admire how the decorative programs reflect the function of each chamber, featuring carved stone reliefs in the larger M1 tomb and delicate frescoes rendered in line within tomb M2.

Above ground, the impressive earth mounds still rise 10 and 7.5 meters high, offering a direct link to China's imperial past.
