Why Dembi Dollo
Dembi Dollo, also written as Dembidollo or Dambi Doolloo, is a market town situated in the southwestern part of Ethiopia. Positioned at an altitude ranging between 1,701 and 1,827 meters above sea level, the settlement acts as the administrative seat for the Kelam Welega Zone inside the Oromia Region. It stands as the most populous locality within the surrounding Sayo district.
Originally called Sayo after a semi-autonomous domain that held power in the region after 1900, the settlement became the residence for local governors prior to the Italian invasion. Around 1912, Emperor Iyasu V visited the area and was greeted by Dejazmach Jote. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the town developed into a major commercial hub for coffee, annually shipping approximately 500,000 kilograms of coffee beans alongside significant volumes of wax and hides to Sudan.
By 1958, Dembi Dollo attained status as a First Class Township, the same year that a local branch of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia was established. The town also played a role in the political events surrounding the end of the Derg government in 1991, briefly coming under civilian administration before political shifts in 1992 led to a change in control. Modern municipal projects have continued to develop the town's public utilities, including updated water distribution systems.
In terms of local industry and culture, Dembi Dollo is notably recognized for its traditional goldsmithing craftsmanship and the local production of tej, a traditional honey wine. The community is home to a diverse population with varied religious traditions, predominantly Protestant, alongside Ethiopian Orthodox, Muslim, and Catholic communities. The town is also associated with prominent historical figures, including the local musician and activist Ebbisa Adunya.
