Why Dodoma
Dodoma, officially designated as Dodoma City, serves as the national and administrative capital of Tanzania. Situated in the geographic center of the country, its name originates from the indigenous Gogo language, meaning "it has sunk." The municipality covers 2,669 square kilometres, with 625 square kilometres classified as urbanized, and lies approximately 453 kilometres west of the former capital at Dar es Salaam and 441 kilometres south of Arusha.
The city experiences a semi-arid climate characterized by warm to hot temperatures throughout the year. Nighttime temperatures dip during the cooler month of July to around 13 °C. Dodoma receives an average of 610 millimetres of rainfall annually, with almost all precipitation occurring during a single wet season between December and April, followed by a prolonged dry period for the remainder of the year.
Originally established as a railway settlement in 1907 under German colonial administration, Dodoma was selected in 1974 to replace Dar es Salaam as Tanzania's new capital. The selection aimed to centralize government functions, stimulate economic development in the interior, and embody national values. Designed on a human-scaled garden city framework intended to curve with the surrounding countryside, Dodoma officially became the national capital in 1996. Key government infrastructure has gradually settled in the city, including a national parliament building completed in 2006, government ministry headquarters in the Mtumba district, and a state house complex opened in 2023.
Alongside its role as a political center, Dodoma reflects a multi-cultural population composed of indigenous Gogo, Rangi, and Sandawe communities together with residents from across Tanzania. The city is home to several major institutions of higher education, including the University of Dodoma and St. Johns University. Visitors and residents find places of worship representing diverse traditions, such as the Gaddafi Mosque, the Sunni Masjid, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, a Hindu Mandir, and a Sikh Gurudwara. Athletic activity focuses around Jamhuri Stadium and the municipal football team, Dodoma Jiji FC.
Transport connections link Dodoma to major regional routes across East Africa. The city is positioned along the Cairo-Cape Town Highway and the Great North Road, facilitating overland travel toward Singida, Babati, Iringa, and Morogoro. Rail connectivity is provided by both the historic metre-gauge Central Railway Line and a modern electrified Standard Gauge Railway offering passenger service directly to Dar es Salaam. Local air transport operates through Dodoma Airport near the city center, while a larger international facility, Msalato International Airport, is under construction to the north.
