Why Dongducheon

Dongducheon is a city situated in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, positioned to the north of the national capital, Seoul. Due to its location, the city plays a strategic role in the defense of Seoul. It serves as a prominent camptown that grew substantially to cater to the needs of military personnel, housing key bases for the United States Second Infantry Division such as Camp Casey and Camp Hovey, alongside largely disused facilities like Camp Castle and Camp Nimble.

The area has a long history, having once been incorporated into the Goguryeo kingdom as an ancient village land holding known as naeulmae hyun. During the North-South States Period under Unified Silla, it became Sacheon village, and it later fell under the jurisdiction of Yangju during the Goryeo era. In the modern era, the locality transitioned to township status in 1963 as Dongducheon-eup before officially being established as Dongducheon City in 1981, with additional administrative areas incorporated in 1983.

Visitors to Dongducheon can experience notable annual cultural events. Since 1999, the city has hosted the Dongducheon Rock Festival, recognized as one of South Korea's largest rock music gatherings, which has previously utilized returned military property such as Camp Nimble. During the autumn season, the city also conducts a maple festival that takes place across several local streets and neighborhoods.

Dongducheon experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate, characterized by cold, dry winter months and hot, precipitation-heavy summers. Educational infrastructure within the city includes dozens of elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as Hanbuk University.
