If you are exploring the vibrant cultural scene of Cameroon, Doual'art is an essential stop. Founded in 1991 by Marilyn Douala Bell and Didier Schaub, this independent non-profit cultural organization and art center focuses on contemporary art and the urban transformations of African cities. Located in the Bonanjo neighborhood at Place du Gouvernement, the center operates out of the Espace doual'art—a thoughtfully restored former cinema of the Palace of Douala Kings designed by architect Danièle Diwouta-Kotto.
When you visit, you will experience a dynamic venue featuring an exhibition space, offices, a cafeteria, and a relaxing outside garden. The institution acts as a bridge between local urban life and contemporary art, hosting exhibitions, projections, installations, conferences, meetings, and performances. Doual'art uses participatory artistic initiatives to foster social cohesion, freedom of expression, and cultural identity, having produced site-specific public artworks across more than 12 city neighborhoods—including the landmark La Nouvelle Liberté.
It also organizes the triennial SUD Salon Urbain de Douala every December, making it a revolutionary force in Cameroon's contemporary art landscape that you will thoroughly enjoy discovering.
