Dubai is a city of superlatives — the tallest tower, vast malls, man-made islands and desert on the doorstep. For a first visit, the trick is to balance the record-breaking modern spectacle with a taste of the old trading city. These five sights give you the full range.

Start at the top, literally: the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on earth, whose observation decks give a jaw-dropping view over city, sea and desert — book a timed sunset slot ahead for the best of both day and night. At its foot, the Dubai Fountain & Dubai Mall pair the world’s largest choreographed fountain show (free, every evening) with a mall so big it has an aquarium and an ice rink.

For contrast, cross to Old Dubai & the Creek, where a one-dirham abra boat ride, the gold and spice souks and the historic Al Fahidi quarter show the city before the skyscrapers — the most atmospheric hours in Dubai. Then head out for a classic desert safari: dune drives, camels and a sunset over the sand, an essential Dubai experience. Finish on the Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped island, for a beach afternoon and the skyline view back to the city.

Between the sights, plan around the heat — mornings and evenings outdoors, midday in the malls — and note distances are large, so a car or taxi makes the day. Each guide below has tickets, the honest verdict and how to time your visit, so you can turn these five into a first trip that balances the futuristic and the traditional.

A practical note: Dubai is built around the car, so distances between the Burj Khalifa, Old Dubai and the Palm are large — use taxis or the driverless Metro, which is cheap and links many of the big sights. Plan your days around the heat, with outdoor plans early or late and the malls at midday, and book the Burj Khalifa deck and your desert safari online in advance. Dress modestly in Old Dubai and the mosques, and carry water everywhere you go.
