Step back into Gold Rush-era history when you visit the Eagle Theatre in Sacramento, California. Established in 1849, this remarkable site holds the distinction of being the very first permanent theatre built in the state of California. Originally constructed as a relatively small, wood-framed structure topped with a canvas cover, a tin roof, and a simple packed earth floor, it stood at 925 Front Street as one of the earliest buildings in the rapidly growing new city.

During its early days, you would have found a wide variety of entertainment designed to delight a rough crowd of wild west pioneers and eager gold miners. Back then, patrons bought their two-dollar or three-dollar tickets at a nearby saloon, most likely the Round Tent Saloon located just to the south. Though the original structure was flooded on January 4, 1850, the history of this unique destination endures.

Today, the theatre is owned by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and administered by the California State Railroad Museum as part of the Old Sacramento State Historic Park. Visit to explore a historic Gold Rush landmark that reflects early wild west entertainment.
