Why Eleuthera
Eleuthera is a long, slender island and surrounding archipelago in The Bahamas, situated roughly 50 miles east of Nassau. Its eastern coastline faces the Atlantic Ocean, while its western side sits along the Great Bahama Bank. Measuring approximately 110 miles in length and frequently just around a mile wide, the main landmass features a landscape of rolling pink sand beaches, ancient coral reef outcrops, caves, and a maximum elevation of 200 feet. The broader island group encompasses smaller offshore landmasses including Harbour Island, Current Island, Windermere Island, and Man Island.
Originally known as Cigatoo or Cigateo to its early Taíno and Lucayan inhabitants, the island received its modern name—derived from the Greek word for free—following the arrival of British Puritan settlers in 1648. Known as the Eleutherian Adventurers, these colonists initially resided at Preacher's Cave. The island later experienced an agriculturally prosperous period between 1950 and 1980 centered on pineapple exports. Today, tourism forms the main economic activity across its administrative districts, which include North, Central, and South Eleuthera, as well as Harbour Island and Spanish Wells.
Visitors to Eleuthera can explore numerous settlements spanning from north to south, including the administrative capital of Governor's Harbour, Rock Sound, Tarpum Bay, and Gregory Town. Notable sights in the northern portion include the narrow Glass Window Bridge, the Hatchet Bay caves, and Surfer's Beach. Toward the southern end, key points of interest include Ocean Hole and Lighthouse Beach. In Governor's Harbour, travelers can view the Haynes Public Library, a structure built in 1897 that represents the oldest government complex on the island.
Nature destinations on the island include the Leon Levy Native Plant Reserve, a 25-acre preserve equipped with an environmental education center. Eleuthera harbors 13 catalogued native amphibian and reptile species, while the surrounding waters contain an abundance of rays and sharks due to a ban on local long-line fishing. Cultural attractions also celebrate local heritage, such as the annual Pineapple Festival held in Gregory Town.
The island is accessible by both air and sea connections. Aviation access is provided through three sites: North Eleuthera Airport, Governor's Harbour Airport, and Rock Sound Airport. For ground transit, the 110-mile Queens Highway serves as the single main road running the length of the primary island. Maritime entry points include ports, docks, and marinas situated at Governor's Harbour, Current Island, Harbour Island, North Eleuthera, Rock Sound, and Spanish Wells.
