Why Emmen
Emmen is a Swiss municipality located in the Hochdorf district within the canton of Lucerne. Serving as the most populous municipality in its district, it is composed of the primary village of Emmen, the larger town of Emmenbrücke, and several surrounding hamlets. The municipality forms an integral part of the broader Lucerne metropolitan region, situated geographically at the point where the Kleine Emme river flows into the Reuss.
First documented in 840 under the name Emau, the area spent centuries under the administration of Murbach Abbey in the Vosges. It transferred to Habsburg ownership in 1291, but following the Battle of Sempach in 1386, control shifted to the Canton of Lucerne. Historical records also note local involvement in the Swiss peasant war of 1653. In 1803, Emmen joined the Hochdorf district, and its voters later decided in 2012 to remain an independent municipality rather than merge with the city of Lucerne.
The municipality covers roughly 20.3 square kilometers, featuring a land mix divided between agricultural pastures, farmlands, forests, and settled residential or commercial areas. Its economy balances a traditional primary sector with significant secondary and tertiary employment. Major local industries include steel manufacturing, milk processing, and defense engineering, supported by companies such as Swiss Steel, Emmi AG, and Ruag. The military presence is also prominent, with the Emmen Air Base and an anti-aircraft unit employing a portion of the population.
Visitors and residents navigate the area via Lucerne's public transit system, VBL, which links into the passepartout fare network. Rail travel is served by two transit lines operating through four municipal stations: Emmenbrücke, Emmenbrücke Gersag, Emmenbrücke Kapf, and Waldibrücke. Local recreation includes supporting two municipal football clubs, FC Emmenbrücke and SC Emmen.
