Why Europa Island

Europa Island, known in French as Île Europa and in Malagasy as Nosy Ampela, is a low-lying tropical atoll in the Mozambique Channel. Situated about one-third of the distance from southern Madagascar to southern Mozambique, this 28-square-kilometre island measures six kilometres across and reaches a maximum elevation of six metres. The landmass features 22.2 kilometres of coastline ringed by coral beaches and a fringing reef. At its center lies a nine-square-kilometre mangrove lagoon that opens to the sea on one side.

Portuguese navigators likely observed the island starting in the 16th century, and the British vessel HMS Norfolk logged it in 1764, mistakenly identifying it as Bassas da India. The island took its modern name from the British ship Europa, which visited in 1774, with the name formally conferred by William Fitzwilliam Owen in 1825. France officially claimed the territory in 1897, though it remains claimed by Madagascar. Early settlement efforts between the 1860s and 1920s proved unsuccessful, leaving behind graves and structural ruins. Today, the uninhabited island is managed as a district of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands and hosts a small military garrison from Réunion.

Protected as a nature reserve, Europa Island consists of dry forest, scrub, Euphorbia growth, mangrove swamps, and the remnants of a former sisal plantation. It is internationally recognized as a major nesting site for green sea turtles, a feature highlighted in a 1968 episode of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. BirdLife International designates the atoll as an Important Bird Area. It supports the second-largest great frigatebird colony in the western Indian Ocean, along with tropical shearwaters, dimorphic egrets, Caspian terns, and the only known breeding population of Malagasy pond herons outside Aldabra and Madagascar. Additional wildlife includes an endemic white-tailed tropicbird subspecies, a unique white-eye subspecies, landbirds, a native hissing cockroach, and introduced goats.

Influenced by the Agulhas Current, sea temperatures around the island generally remain above 30 °C. The climate combines semi-arid and tropical conditions, bringing wet summers, dry winters, periodic cyclones, and southeast trade winds during the austral winter. Because there are no ports or natural harbours, ships must anchor offshore. Access to the island is provided by a 1,500-metre airstrip in the northwest, which supports visits by scientists and service personnel tending the automated weather station.
