Why Falkenberg
Falkenberg is a coastal town and municipal seat located in Halland County on the western coast of Sweden, situated at the mouth of the Ätran River. Situated approximately 45 kilometers northwest of Halmstad and 105 kilometers south of Gothenburg, the town has established itself as a popular summer seaside resort. Its principal shoreline feature is the beach at Skrea strand. The town's name originates from the Swedish words for falcon and mountain.
The history of the area traces back to the early 13th century, when a Danish king constructed a fort along the eastern bank of the Ätran River in a region where falconry took place. A market town subsequently emerged on the northern side of the river, where a church was erected around 1300. A secondary town, Ny-Falkenberg, existed close by from the 14th century until the Northern Seven Years' War, while the original fort was destroyed in 1434. Falkenberg obtained market rights by 1558 and became a permanent part of Sweden following the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Gradual industrial development began in the late 19th century, followed by various municipal boundary expansions during the 20th century.
Prominent local landmarks include the Falkenberg Church, Saint Lawrence Church, the Town Hall, the Old Town Hall, and the Falkhallen multipurpose venue. The town is also home to several public recreation facilities, such as the Klitterbadet bath house, Falkenbergs IP, the Falkenberg Sports Centre, and the Falcon Alkoholfri Arena. In addition, the community maintains an active sports presence, with national-level teams competing in table tennis, volleyball, football, and bowling.
Falkenberg remains accessible along a traditional west coast transport corridor. High-speed road travel is facilitated by European route E6, which operates as a dual carriageway just outside the town, while regional rail transport is provided by the West Coast Railway Line. Internal transit relies on seven local bus routes, and County roads 150 and 154 provide direct links to neighboring inland areas such as Torup and Svenljunga.
