When you explore downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, you will find a rich piece of local heritage at the First United Methodist Church. Originally chartered back in 1880, this historic site holds a special place in the city's past as its original structure, constructed between 1880 and 1882, served as the very first church in New Town. Although that initial adobe sanctuary was eventually demolished at the turn of the century after being outgrown, the historic site evolved to accommodate its growing community.
Today, you can appreciate the architecturally significant building constructed on the same site in 1904. Designed by architect Charles Frederick Whittlesey, this structure is now known as Fellowship Hall. A highlight to see during your visit includes the beautiful Tiffany-style windows that were installed shortly after the 1904 building was completed.
As the congregation continued to expand, a larger sanctuary was added to the property in 1955. Recognizing its profound historic and architectural value, the church was placed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties in 1975 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
