When you visit Lexington, Kentucky, make sure to stop by 171 Market Street to admire the historic First Presbyterian Church. Rooted in local history, the congregation was originally founded in 1784 under the name Mount Zion Church, making it one of the very oldest churches in Lexington. The church officially adopted its current name when moving into this striking building back in 1874, and its rich historical value was formally recognized when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Architecturally, you will be treated to a classic Gothic style crafted by renowned local architect Cincinnatus Shryock, who graduated from nearby Transylvania University and served as an elder at the church. Shryock came from a prominent architectural family in Kentucky, well known for landmark designs across the state like the Old State Capital building in Frankfort. As you explore the exterior, keep an eye out for the magnificent front tower anchored by its distinctive copper spire.

Beautiful stained glass windows adorn the tall tower and span across the rest of the structure. When it was built, it stood out as an important landmark in the Lexington skyline, making it a wonderful stop for architecture and history enthusiasts alike.
