Step back in time at Kansas City’s oldest historic venue, the Folly Theater. Built in 1900 by architect Louis S. Curtiss as the Standard Theatre, this former vaudeville hall has lived many lives—hosting legendary acts from Sarah Bernhardt and Fannie Brice to prizefighters Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey, as well as burlesque stars and dramatic Shakespearean productions.
Saved from demolition by passionate historic preservation activists in the 1970s, it now stands as a beautifully restored, premier performance venue managed by the nonprofit Performing Arts Foundation. When you visit downtown Kansas City, you will be struck by the building's striking Neo-Palladian facade, featuring Carthage limestone, red pressed brick, rusticated arches, and a distinctive adapted Palladian window. Step inside to marvel at the vibrant interior, styled in classic red and gold tones.
The 1,078-seat house features three seating sections facing a highly decorated proscenium arch, flanked by elegant balcony-level boxes and a large main balcony. Beyond admiring the historic architecture, you can catch an incredible live event. The theater hosts a diverse lineup, including a signature Jazz Series, a Kids Series, "Cyprus Avenue Live!" performances, classical concerts, chorus shows, and the Kansas City Burlesque Festival.
