French Church of Tangier 🇲🇦

Discover the French Church of Tangier, formally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and of Saint Joan of Arc, or the Église des Sables. Located on a median ground in the middle of Omar Ibn al-Khattab Avenue in Tangier's Ville Nouvelle, this historic parish church was built between 1949 and 1953 for the French community during the era of the Tangier International Zone. You will find that its construction was driven by a friendly rivalry among European nations aiming to maximize their public presence, which ultimately spurred the creation of other famous local landmarks.

When you visit this protected Moroccan heritage site, you will admire its distinctive Art Deco architectural style. Step closer to take in the impressive exterior featuring a detailed statue of the Virgin Mary created by sculptor Albert Navarra right on the façade. Inside the building, your attention will be drawn to the monumental stained glass windows designed by artist Charles Plessard between 1951 and 1958.
