Located right in the centre of Iceland's capital by the picturesque lake Tjörnin, Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík (The Free Church in Reykjavik) is a historic Lutheran church independent from the established Church of Iceland. Established in the autumn of 1899 to bring the church closer to the people and serve a growing population of craftsmen and tradesmen, this landmark offers a fascinating look into the city's evolving community history. Unlike traditional institutions born from doctrinal disputes, this congregation arose from objections to national church organisation, taking inspiration from congregations in Norway and North American Icelandic immigrant communities.

When you visit, you will see a beautifully expanded structure positioned right at the eastern edge of the lake. Originally consecrated on 22 February 1903, the building boasts notable architectural additions, including extensions designed by architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson just two years after its opening. You can also admire the eastern concrete chancel and forechurch alterations built in 1924 under master builder Guðmundur H. Þorláksson.
