Located in northeastern India in the southwestern part of Guwahati city, just west of Ahomgaon, Garchuk Lachit Garh—popularly known today as Lachit Garh—offers you a direct connection to medieval military history. Constructed under the Ahom kingdom around 1669 to 1670 CE during the era of commander Lachit Borphukan, this historical fortification stretches for about three kilometers. It originally extended from the northern Fatasil hills at Garchuk locality, cutting right across National Highway 37 at Garchuk Charali, and continuing down to the southern hills via Pamahi and Moinakhurung.
When you visit, you can explore the strategic elements built specifically to deter invading Mughal cavalry, including two impressive earthen ramparts, two water-filled lakes positioned in between them, and deep defensive ditches dug out front. You will also tread along what was historically known as Asurar Ali, a medieval fort road that has now transformed into Pamohi Road. Historic accounts from the Tai-Ahom Buranji detail how key officers once positioned elite troops across these hills and roads to defend the region.
While modern illegal encroachment has unfortunately taken its toll on this unique heritage site, seeing these surviving historical earthworks gives you a fascinating look into Assam's medieval defensive ingenuity.
